Since the age of four I have been involved in sports and fitness. My parents always said take your multivitamins and mineral supplements before we played any games. If feels like yesterday when my mom would say “don’t go play soccer before you take your Flintstones, they will make you as strong as superman”. I was a young boy but even then I felt “enhanced” taking my multivitamins. As a teenager I competed in many sports, the value of multivitamins and supplements in was body was a fundamental part of my training. I always carried Vitamin C in my backpack with fruits and protein to ensure my body stayed nourished and performing at its best. My love for sports and the proper nutrition for our bodies influenced my career path, Elite trainer. I now have over 14 years of experience and during this time I have had the privilege of educating my clients, friends, and family on the benefits of minerals, vitamins and supplements.
In today’s world information is available at our finger tips from the Internet and social media but most people still don’t fully understand the importance of minerals and vitamins for our bodies. Minerals, Vitamins and supplements are very important to healthy living, I am going to share some basic but important information with you.
Minerals, vitamins and supplements are “essential” nutrients to the body that are needed daily in small amounts. They have the ability to improve health and immune system functioning as well as playing vital roles in many other physiological functions. They help maintain proper balance (homeostasis) from digestion, vision, muscle, hormonal, heart, liver, brain health and much more! One of the main reasons why Minerals, vitamins and supplements are so important is because they assist in regulating the metabolic biochemical reactions that make energy from digested food. This is how we are able to work and play all day. If your body is lacking these nutrients it could cause cancer, colon inefficiency, constipation, lack of energy, lethargy, mood swings and much more. You could also suffer from tendon, muscle, ligament, bone deterioration, body aches/weakness, and supressed immune system.
Minerals are “inorganic” chemicals and vitamins are “organic” chemicals. Meaning vitamins are created and occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, animal sources and other foods. Vitamins act as coenzymes in the body, which means they act as catalysts and enhance the chemical cascade reactions of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Without the proper sequence of cascade chemical reactions you wouldn’t be in ultimate health. You wouldn’t be able to burn fat and build muscle and your cognitive function is compromised. This will result in Body weakness and low levels are energy.
Minerals can be found in food sources. They are essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, fluid balance (electrolytes), kidney filtration, muscular contraction, and the manufacturing of energy by the body. Minerals are very important for the body, they aid in the building of elements for tissues in the body and help protect against organ damage and systemic inflammation.
the world of Vitamins and Minerals can be very complex, I have decided to break down the article in two parts. This part was a sweet and simple introduction to micronutrients. Next week, on Part 2 I will go over all the major minerals, vitamins and supplements Canada needs to stay healthy. Especially the ones that will help you be an active body individual. In reality I will barely be scratching the surface on this massive subject. There are a huge amount of biochemical reactions that vitamins and minerals do in our bodies. You don’t need to drive yourself nuts over the science and know every single detail of biochemistry. The main thing to remember about part 1 is micronutrients are needed by your body everyday.
