Your Body has a BONE to Pick With You!
Make no bones about the fact that your bone health is vital to your life. Like so many common preventable diseases, Osteoporosis is created through the accumulated effects of the choices you make over the years. Diet & lifestyle choices along with your mental, emotional and spiritual health contribute to the quality of your overall health. Bone health is no exception. The quality of your choices now absolutely and directly affects your future physical bone health.
Bone is constantly dissolved and utilized by the body. If the body cannot replace it as quickly as it uses it the body is put into a deficit and so begins the onset of osteopenia eventually reaching the more advanced level of preventable osteoporosis.
There are two main reasons why one’s body is unable to reproduce the bone it uses, insufficient vitamins and minerals or hormonal imbalance. Bone building is severely compromised when there are insufficient amounts of calcium, magnesium, chromium, potassium, and vitamin D. However hormonal imbalance is a common reason people become afflicted by this preventable disease. In women it is common to suffer from depleted levels of estrogen preventing the maintenance of normal levels of Vitamin D which is vital for the absorption of calcium and therefore bone growth. Men pay attention too because over 11 million of them also suffer from preventable osteoporosis conditions resulting in more deaths than the combined numbers of cervical and breast cancer.
Natural bone loss will increase one’s risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Everyone begins to lose bone at .5%-2% per year starting at around age 30. High levels of stress which many people suffer from daily; results in high levels of cortisol in the body which accelerates bone loss. For women this is accelerated even more during menopause. However choosing to lift heavy weights over time maintains bone mass and can even increase bone mineral density even during this time for women.
By implementing weight bearing exercises into your fitness regime instead of exclusively doing cardio will improve your bone health dramatically now and for the future. There is a process called ‘bone remodelling’ that occurs during weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercises where the breaking down of old bone by the osteoclasts makes room for the creating of new bone by the osteoblasts. This process does not occur during cardio.
Early detection of the onset of this disease can lower your chance of becoming osteoporotic and if you are already diagnosed you can reverse this disease and prevent a life of needless suffering by simply making basic lifestyle changes as mentioned above in the form of exercises and relevant diet. Eliminate soda, refined sugar & smoking for when consumed they all reduce phosphorus levels in the body and when there is insufficient levels of phosphorus; calcium is lost and then bone deterioration occurs. A lifetime of choosing these unhealthy dietary choices results in the dramatic increase of the risk of bone fractures. Statistics show that 20% of older individuals with osteoporosis who fracture their hip die within one year.
Therefore you can see how maintaining healthy strong bones is crucial for long term health and it can all boil down to the decisions you make right now.
